Hiring a skip in Cardiff
Skips on the highway in Wales are licensed under the Highways Act 1980, the same statute as England, but the authority is whichever council owns the road — and CF spans Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Caerphilly, Bridgend and Merthyr Tydfil, and touches others at its edges. Inside the city the constraint is the terraced stock. Cathays, Roath, Grangetown and Splott are close to unbroken terraces with no off-street parking and heavy residents' parking pressure, so a skip goes on the road under licence and the space has to be found and held. The outer suburbs and the Vale are the opposite case, with drives that take a 6- or 8-yard skip without any paperwork at all.
For the valley districts north of the city, access rather than paperwork tends to decide the job: narrow terraced streets on a gradient, and rear lanes that a skip lorry cannot turn in. A grab lorry working from the road handles loose material in one visit without a container, and wait-and-load does the same for a job that can be cleared quickly.

The council's fee is what the council publishes for a standard skip licence, as the council states it; it carries no VAT. Notice is shown only where we hold it in the council's own words, in working days — a dash means we hold none, not that the council asks for none. "Priced here as" a number of days means we hold no statement from the council of how long its licence lasts, and that is the length our booking uses.
"With us, 14 days (incl. VAT)" is what the permit adds to your booking's total, booked with enough notice. Where we hold no published fee for a council, that figure is our own standard permit charge, not the council's. Two things are not in these figures and are priced when you book: a charge for booking at short notice, and a parking bay suspension where the skip takes a marked bay. In some councils with controlled parking zones, the on-road price you see first assumes a bay is needed until you say it is not.
